Eighteen

“Your dreamwalking sure has come to bite you in the ass, huh?” Zion asks in between bites of his chocolate croissant.

“I didn’t dreamwalk and run into the ghouls,” I correct him as I turn my mug of tea around in my hands. “They came into my dreams.” I finally bring the mug up to my lips. My taste buds explode with the delicious and cooling taste of peppermint.

Zion finishes off his croissant as he sits there contemplating. He taps his fingers against the wood of the table before speaking, “Are you sure they were ghouls? I’ve always heard that they’re incredibly rare.”

I shrug my shoulders and stare out into the cafe. It’s busy for a Tuesday morning, but all of Zion’s groupies have found out that he’s back in town and now they’re following him everywhere. Even to my house. It is far past being annoying at this point.

We decided to go out for brunch this morning so that they could get their fill of him, but I don’t think it’ll keep them away. They’re like flies to honey. They’ll keep flocking even as the honey ages.

“That’s what Lucius said they were. He’s the great daemon lord.”

I set my mug back down onto the table with a sigh. Tension in the house has only increased since Lucius walked out two nights ago. Edwin and I have kept our affection to a minimum, which is killing me inside, but I would rather suffer than force my friend to suffer because of me.

“Speaking of Lucius, how is that going?” Zion smothers another croissant in butter and jam as he effectively avoids looking at his groupies. If I didn’t know better, I’d say that even he’s getting irritated with them.

“Things are painfully awkward and uncomfortable. He stayed at the house last night so I guess it’s good that he didn’t storm off again?” He partially kept his promise. He did just say that he needed one night away, but things between us are most definitely not back to normal.

“I think that the sooner we get answers, the sooner the tension will die down. The guys are walking on pins and needles. Hell, Edwin woke me up every hour last night to make sure that I wasn’t stuck in a ghoul-filled dream.” I let out a light chuckle even though I was incredibly annoyed the third time he woke me up.

Love is about sacrifice and it looks like my sacrifice is that I have to temporarily give up my peaceful uninterrupted sleep.

“I also have something else to tell you,” I say slowly. I peel the flaky layers off of my croissant, unable to look Zion in the eye. He’s not going to be happy about what I have to tell him.

“What’s up?”

I brave a taste of my croissant before looking up at my best friend. He’s waiting on me, patiently, but neither of us are too incredibly patient. There is a limit.

“Uhm, well, do you remember that pendant we found in Elizabeth’s basement?” I begin.
